No começo, Sauron não sabia, mas ele podia adivinhar:

Não consigo encontrar mais informações sobre o que Sauron sabe sobre os Portadores do Anel na Segunda Era. O comentário de Galadriel em Fellowship sugere que ele ainda apenas suspeita, mas não sabe. Parece provável que ele ainda acreditasse que Gil-galad possuía um (ou mais), Gil-galad sendo o Rei Supremo e tudo mais, mas não consigo encontrar nenhuma referência.

E, claro, Sauron teve problemas maiores na conclusão da Segunda Era.

A terceira idade

Galadriel sugere que Sauron nunca ficou definitivamente ciente de que ela tinha Nenya:

Embora Galadriel não seja infalível (sendo uma personagem do livro e tudo), ela sugere que ela tem um grau de acesso à mente de Sauron, então provavelmente podemos aceitar a palavra dela:

Quanto a Vilya e Narya, é desconhecido. Considerando que Sauron havia matado Gil-galad na Batalha de Dagorlad, ele provavelmente sabia que Gil-galad não tinha nenhum deles. No entanto, não está claro até que ponto ele está ciente dos outros.

Parece razoável suspeitar de Elrond e Círdan, como os outros dois líderes das últimas regiões dos Elfos Altos na Terra-média. • Sauron tem certeza que um anel está em Lothlórien, embora ele não saiba ao certo quem o segura.

• Ele provavelmente adivinha que alguém está nos Portos Cinzentos, mas acha que vai ficar lá para dar aos elfos um jeito de escapar da Terra Média. Taticamente, ele acreditava que poderia ser desconsiderado até o final do jogo. A idéia de os Elfos desistirem voluntariamente de um Anel e cortarem sua própria fuga pode nem ter ocorrido a ele.

• Quando Glorfindel se revela perto de Rivendell, Sauron provavelmente assume que ele está segurando o último anel Élfico.
