Por que Dumbledore não insistiu em interrogar Sirius Black sob Veritaserum?

For the same reasons Muggles use polygraph tests, Veritaserum is no more reliable than its Muggle counterpart. Since some wizards and witches can resist its effects while others cannot, Veritaserum is "unfair and unreliable to use at a trial" and cannot be used as definite proof of guilt or innocence.

Another weakness is that the victim only states what they believe to be true, so the victim's sanity and perception of reality also factors in during interrogations. This is the main reason why Barty Crouch Jr.'s testimony was not credible, as he was clearly insane.[3]

A verdadeira questão é por que Sirius não recebeu A TRIAL. Dumbledore poderia tê-lo feito um julgamento - se eles acreditavam que Sirius ou não é outro assunto. Mas parte da razão pela qual Sirius se ressente de Dumbledore em OotP é provavelmente porque ele não foi julgado. Ele ainda pode ter sido preso, mas Dumbledore deve ser o pináculo dos mocinhos e pelo menos tratar as pessoas de forma justa.

Então, por que Sirius nunca foi julgado? Provavelmente muitas razões:

5. Dumbledore é manipulador e não lutou porque Sirius não era útil para ele
6. O corpo de Voldemort está lá, os comensais agora são inofensivos, anos de guerra e medo e morte acabaram, as pessoas querem se casar novamente, ter filhos novamente, viver novamente. Sirius é pensado para ser guardião secreto e Peter é pensado para estar morto. Há comissários para lidar, pessoas para lamentar e a coisa toda pode ser trágica, mas é SIMPLES e LÓGICA e realmente a opção mais fácil. Então ninguém tenta um julgamento. Não parece haver nenhuma evidência de que Sirius tenha negado as acusações contra ele. Em Prisioneiro de Azkaban Cornélio Fudge descreveu como eles encontraram Sirius (minha ênfase):

A crater in the middle of the street, so deep it had cracked the sewer below. Bodies everywhere. Muggles screaming. And Black standing there laughing, with what was left of Pettigrew in front of him... a heap of bloodstained robes and a few — a few fragments —"

Então Sirius foi pego rindo da cena do assassinato. Nunca nos é dito que ele proclamou sua inocência, mesmo que isso certamente tenha sido um detalhe significativo, particularmente depois que ele escapou. It didn't feel right. I was scared. I set out for your parents' house straightaway. And when I saw their house, destroyed, and their bodies... I realized what Peter must've done... what I'd done...."

Se mesmo doze anos mais tarde, e depois de sair da prisão, ele ainda estivesse considerando-se (parcialmente) culpado, é muito mais provável que ele se considerasse culpado no momento do crime e na prisão.

Assim, podemos ter uma situação em que haja muitas evidências contra uma pessoa e ele nem mesmo professa sua própria inocência. Importante, existe uma situação paralela em outras partes da série, que esclarece o que acontece em tal situação. Em Príncipe Mestiço , discutindo a condenação de Morfin Gaunt pelo assassinato dos Enigmas (que ele não havia cometido), Dumbledore diz (minha ênfase):

"So the Ministry called upon Morfin. They did not need to question him, to use Veritaserum or Legilimency. He admitted to the murder on the spot, giving details only the murderer could know. He was proud, he said, to have killed the Muggles, had been awaiting his chance all these years. He handed over his wand which was proved at once to have been used to kill the Riddles. And he permitted himself to be led off to Azkaban without a fight.

Vemos aqui que, em um caso em que há evidência suficiente contra alguém e o acusado reconhece sua culpa, o Veritaserum é considerado desnecessário.
