O sistema solar no Senhor dos Anéis é baseado em nosso sistema solar real?

Tolkien escreve que a Terra Média é essencialmente nossa terra, em um passado fictício:

I have, I suppose, constructed an imaginary time, but kept my feet on my own mother-earth for place. I prefer that to the contemporary mode of seeking my own remote globes in 'space'. However curious, they are alien, and not lovable with the love of blood-kin. [...] Many reviewers seem to assume that Middle-earth is another planet!

Muitas das estrelas ME também são referências a estrelas reais. Naturalmente, Arda muda radicalmente após a primeira idade. Antes disso, Aman e a Terra Média eram dois continentes em uma Arda plana (!), Rodeada pelo Sol (Anar) e a Lua (Rana). Então, Illúvatar curvou os cantos da Terra (ou algo assim) e fez Arda circular. E após a queda de Númenor, Illúvatar removeu Aman de Arda e mudou de continente e oceanos.

Então, para responder à sua pergunta: terceira idade (e depois) Arda é praticamente idêntica à Terra (astronomicamente), e a primeira era de alguma forma parece ser plana e diferente. (Sim, eu sei, é estranho)

In the second, all but final, draft my father is seen in the act of devising the names of the constellations, with various experimental forms before those that appear in the final text were reached; but he set down the names of the stars without hesitation, thus: *Karnil, Luinil, Nénarm Lumbar, Alkarinque, Elemmire. Above Karnil he wrote 'M', above Lumbar 'S', above Alkarinque 'Jup', and above Elemmire again 'M'. No letter stands above Luinil, but above Nénar there is an 'N' which was struck out.
Now if Alkarinque is Jupiter, then a great red star named Karnil and marked with an 'M' must be Mars - which in turn leads to the identification of Lumbar ('S') with Saturn, and Ellemire ('M') with Mercury. [...]

Ele não tem certeza sobre as identidades de Luinil e Nénar. Eles pareciam ser Netuno e Urano, mas isso não se encaixa com o texto "novas estrelas e mais brilhante contra a vinda do primogênito"

Sim. Tolkien estava realmente muito preocupado em ter seu mundo criado compatível com o que era conhecido pela ciência. Há exemplos em suas Cartas, por exemplo, relacionadas à associação da Feitiçaria do Rei dos Bruxos com criaturas pré-históricas, mas específico para essa pergunta eu vou encaminhá-lo para Mitos Transformados Ensaio 1 (publicado em > Anel de Morgoth ) onde ele afirma:

At that point I was inclined to adhere to the Flat Earth and the astronomically absurd business of the making of the Sun and Moon. But you can make up stories of that kind when you live among people who have the same general background of imagination, when the Sun 'really' rises in the East and goes down in the West, etc. When however it is the general belief that we live upon a 'spherical' island in 'Space' you cannot do this any more.

Note em particular que ele diz "você não pode mais fazer isto" - Tolkien está bem preparado para deixar o conhecimento científico guiar a estrutura do seu mundo.

Isto é verdade para o Silmarillion publicado, mas na verdade, Tolkien começou a abandonar as versões antigas da "Terra Plana" da história, e chegou a escrever uma versão "Round Earth" do Ainulindale, dado como versão "C *" em Anel de Morgoth .

O que ele não havia feito era incorporar as mudanças da "Terra Redonda" em seus outros Contos, de modo que os Contos das Árvores, o Sol e a Lua e a Queda de Numenor nunca foram atualizados para refletir esse novo pensamento. É importante, no entanto, perceber que isso se destina a ser uma cosmologia mítica e não uma descrição fisicamente precisa do mundo. Tolkien diz isso - e bem diretamente - mais cedo no mesmo ensaio de Mitos Transformados que eu citei anteriormente:

The High Eldar living and being tutored by the demiurgic beings must have known ... the 'truth' (according to their measure of understanding). What we have in the Silmarillion etc. are traditions handed on by Men in Numenor and later in Middle-earth (Arnor and Gondor); but already far back ... blended and confused with their own Mannish myths and cosmic ideas.

Que Arda é o Sistema Solar está além de qualquer dúvida; Tolkien disse isso no Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth (também Morgoth's Ring ) assim como em outros lugares:

Physically Arda was what we should call the Solar System. Presumably the Eldar could have had as much and as accurate information concerning this, its structure, origin, and its relation to the rest of Ea (the Universe) as they could comprehend.

Portanto, se os Eldar têm informações precisas (ou pelo menos acesso a informações precisas) sobre a natureza física do mundo, torna-se óbvio que quaisquer declarações nos livros que contradigam essa natureza são parte do Mito.
