No livro, é strongmente sugerido que ele não tenha sido acusado de qualquer crime, presumivelmente porque ele também teria um caso muito bom (por vandalismo) contra o garoto que ele atingiu. Independentemente da decisão de evitar a ação legal, o menino foi expulso e o School Board demitiu Jack.
