Provavelmente não foi muito há muito tempo, já que os ataques de Uruk-hai parecem ser um desenvolvimento recente e Edoras é, embora não seja a melhor das reparações, não em desordem . Apêndice B coloca cerca de um ano entre Frodo partindo do Condado (abril de 3018) e Théoden sendo curado (março de 3019), o que parece plausível.
No entanto, é impossível determinar quando Saruman obteve o poder de assumir o controle total do corpo de Théoden.

Nos livros, Saruman nunca controla diretamente Théoden como ele faz no filme. No entanto, está bastante implícito que a influência de Wormtongue está piorando a saúde do rei, então vamos com isso.
De acordo com Contos Inacabados , a influência de Gríma sobre Théoden teve seu pico na T.A. 3014, quatro anos antes dos eventos da Fellowship , quando o rei teve uma crise de saúde:
The chief obstacles to an easy conquest of Rohan by Saruman were Théodred and Éomer: they were vigorous men, devoted to the King, and high in his affections, as his only son and his sister-son; and they did all that they could to thwart the influence over him that Gríma gained when the King's health began to fail. This occurred early in the year 3014, when Théoden was sixty-six; his malady may thus have been due to natural causes, though the Rohirrim commonly lived till near or beyond their eightieth year. But it may well have been induced or increased by subtle poisons, administered by Gríma. In any case Théoden's sense of weakness and dependence on Gríma was largely due to the cunning and skill of this evil counsellor's suggestions.
