Como a "purificação" acontece?
Com base no que acontece no romance canônico Ahsoka , os cristais são purificados meditando com eles; esta é essencialmente a única coisa que Ahsoka faz entre o sabre de luz do Inquisidor (vermelho) explodindo e os sabres de luz (brancos) acendendo:
Presumivelmente, dentro da Força, Ahsoka está criando uma ligação com seu cristal; Pablo Hidalgo disse no Twitter que é assim que os cristais mudam de cor para o Jedi, que é uma das poucas coisas que sabemos sobre o processo:Before she could even consider shouting a warning, the red lightsaber burst into a mess of noise and light. Bright spots pricked at her eyes, and then all was quiet. The creature wasn't going to bother her anymore.

She pushed aside her sense of urgency, even though she was in a hurry. Meditation came easily, as if she were sitting in safety in the Jedi Temple itself, instead of a dusty street with her enemies closing in. When Ahsoka opened her hands, she was not surprised to find that two lightsabers, rough and unfinished, were waiting.
They would need more work, but they were hers.
When she turned them on, they shone the brightest white.

@pablohidalgo The crystal takes on a color when a Jedi achieves a bond with "his/her" kyber. No one knows what the colors signify.
Em um nível interno, a "purificação" parece estar resolvendo o conflito do lado negro / lado claro dentro do cristal; Ahsoka sugere que os cristais ficam vermelhos, inclinando a balança em favor do Dark (ênfase minha):
Dark crystals were made, too, but not in that holy place. They were plundered from their rightful bearers and corrupted by the hands that stole them. Even rock could be changed by the power of the Force, bleeding alterations until their color was the deepest red. The balance was finely staged between the two, light and dark, and it took very little to upset it.

Se um cristal pode ou não ser "purificado" por qualquer pessoa, ou apenas pela pessoa que o cristal escolhe como seu portador adequado, é desconhecido.
A "purificação" sempre resulta em um cristal branco (ou sem cor)?
Nós não sabemos; Ahsoka é o único exemplo que temos desse processo em ação, e sua cor de sabre de luz explicitamente no Twitter :

Se forçado a adivinhar, eu suporia que um cristal "purificado" se voltaria para qualquer cor que fosse apropriada para a pessoa que se ligasse a ele; Assim, por exemplo, Luke poderia purificar o cristal no sabre de luz de Vader e transformá-lo em verde. Mas isso é, claro, apenas um palpite.
