Você está certo que a premissa como você afirmou não faz sentido, porque você está perdendo uma parte fundamental - Renly sabia sobre o incesto.

Isso instantaneamente torna suas motivações sensatas. Ele diz a Robert que os filhos de Cersei não são realmente seus, Cersei e os filhos são executados, e isso deixa Robert como um rei de meia idade sem herdeiro. Ele precisa se casar novamente e ter um filho, então Renly o apresenta a Margaery, que seria uma escolha muito razoável de qualquer maneira. Isso acaba com o Renly e seus aliados, os Tyrell, como os novos poderes por trás do trono, com os Lannisters maciçamente em desuso.

Essa é a única maneira pela qual o plano faz sentido - se Renly apenas quisesse que Robert substituísse Cersei por Margaery, não ajudaria os de Tyrell porque o Joffrey ainda seria o próximo rei - o poder deles morreria quando Robert o fizesse, e Margaery seria essencialmente desperdiçada como uma perspectiva de casamento.
