Por que Gimli é permitido viajar para Valinor?

Gimli foi autorizado a ir para Valinor, apesar de não ser portador do anel. Isso é explicado em detalhes ou apenas com a linha "por seu amor por Galadriel"?

Eu vou fornecer uma resposta perspicaz:

Gimli não foi para Valinor.

Nem Frodo, Bilbo nem Sam.
Eles foram para Tol Eressea, onde presumivelmente eles viveriam suas vidas, apesar da canção "Namarie" de Galadriel.

Alguém que tenha as Cartas à mão pode até ser capaz de citar versos e capítulos, irritantes no fundo da minha mente, onde Tolkien afirmou isso. Até mesmo algo sobre os Noldor geralmente só se deslocam para a Ilha Solitária, possivelmente Tirion ou Alqualonde.

Podemos especular que eles puderam visitar brevemente o Valinor e ter algo como uma audiência no Taniquetil com os Valar. Receba um bom tapinha na cabeça por derrotar Sauron. Talvez Gandalf, voltando a ser Olorin, levasse todos a uma visita a Lorien. Quem sabe?

Tem sido uma queixa minha por um tempo aqui de SFFSE como é geralmente confundida: Valinor é as terras dos Valar em Aman. Não é "o Ocidente" no topo.

Não há muitos detalhes sobre isso além do que é dito no Apêndice A ao Retorno do Rei:

We have heard tell that Legolas took Gimli Glóin's son with him because of their great friendship, greater than any that has been between Elf and Dwarf. If this is true, then it is strange indeed: that a Dwarf should be willing to leave Middle-earth for any love, or that the Eldar should receive him, or that the Lords of the West should permit it. But it is said that Gimli went also out of desire to see again the beauty of Galadriel; and it may be that she, being mighty among the Eldar, obtained this grace for him. More cannot be said of this matter.

E o Apêndice B:

Then Legolas built a grey ship in Ithilien, and sailed down Anduin and so over Sea; and with him, it is said, went Gimli the Dwarf. And when that ship passed an end was come in the Middle-earth of the Fellowship of the Ring.

E a letra 154:

But in this story it is supposed that there may be certain rare exceptions or accommodations (legitimately supposed? there always seem to be exceptions); and so certain 'mortals', who have played some great part in Elvish affairs, may pass with the Elves to Elvenhome. Thus Frodo (by the express gift of Arwen) and Bilbo, and eventually Sam (as adumbrated by Frodo); and as a unique exception Gimli the Dwarf, as friend of Legolas and 'servant' of Galadriel.

Há algumas coisas que podemos deduzir desses breves comentários:

É notável que "é dito" que Gimli foi a Valinor, e que o texto principal (do Apêndice A) é muito não-comprometedor sobre o assunto. Pode ser que Gimli não tenha ido a Valinor, afinal.

O texto da carta trata como se realmente acontecesse e observa que Gimli era "uma exceção única".

O texto da carta também observa que isso é concedido aos mortais que desempenharam um papel significativo nos afazeres élficos, ignorando assim a razão (explicitamente declarada em vários outros lugares) de porque Bilbo e Frodo foram: para a cura.

Parece, portanto, que não devemos levar o texto da Carta muito a sério; pode muito bem ser uma idéia passageira que Tolkien teve, mas que não está de acordo com o que ele escreveu em outro lugar.
