Are there any dragons (like real dragons (=animals)) in Rand's world? If not where did they get the idea of dragons?

There are no animal dragons of any kind in this world. The people speak of a man called the Dragon. They know that the banner that has a certain creature on it was the banner of this man and they have taken to calling this creature the dragon. To them it is a simple association with the name of this man.

Um dos conceitos do mundo Wheel of Time é que é o nosso mundo no passado / futuro distante. Em outras palavras, o tempo é cíclico, e os eventos do nosso tempo se tornam os mitos e lendas das eras futuras, e nós, por sua vez, lembramos os eventos das eras futuras como nossos mitos e lendas.

Assim, faz sentido que certos arquétipos mitológicos universais sobrevivam em todas as idades. O conceito de "dragões" parece ser uma dessas coisas.

As pessoas da Segunda e Terceira Era reconhecem a criatura mítica que chamamos de dragão (especificamente, a variação chinesa de um dragão, não a versão mais européia que você vê na maioria dos filmes de fantasia modernos). De onde vem esta criatura lendária, é claro, nunca especificado, porque é um mito. Seria como perguntar de onde veio nosso mito do Grifo ou Unicórnio.

A forma do dragão no estandarte de Lews Therin, a que Rand mais tarde encontra e usa, é descrita muitas vezes, e é claro a partir dessa descrição que é um dragão de estilo chinês. Você também pode ver o banner, por exemplo, na capa do Caminho das Adagas :
