Another point, however, was much harder to understand. This problem arose because we found that the door of each and every cubicle in the depository was locked by a rather complicated gadget. Upon investigation of these gadgets it was found that they contained a number of round metal disks. By now we know that these ingenious gadgets barred entrance to the cubicle until an additional disk was introduced into them through a slot; at that very moment the door became unlocked, permitting access to the cubicle.

uma das críticas menciona especificamente que um segmento diz respeito à ideia de que

"that the toilet seat is a sacred collar one must wear before shouting, down the hole, to the gods below"

pode ser o conto "History Lesson" de Arthur C. Clarke, do livro Expedition to Earth, que é uma coletânea de contos do autor. Na história em questão, há uma má interpretação do funcionamento dos banheiros públicos como locais de culto. Onde alguém colocaria um símbolo (moeda) para os deuses entrarem no santuário (banheiro), também uma confusão engraçada sobre sinais que permitiam não fumantes para estar lá, mas não para os fumantes, os alienígenas (se bem me lembro de venus no futuro), relacionaram isso com fotos que eles acharam de pessoas mais pálidas (não-fumantes) e pessoas de pele mais escura como um olhar mais esfumaçado, então fumantes. O mesmo evento que pôs fim à vida na terra, faz com que as condições de vida se desenvolvam em vênus. A coisa mais interessante que os alienígenas descobriram foi um filme que eles conseguiram fazer funcionar e tentar interpretar.
