TL; DR - os filmes são incrivelmente não confiáveis.
O processo de aprender feitiços é muito mais complexo e difícil do que os filmes indicam. Como os livros respondem mais ou menos a essa questão, não farei muito, mas forneço citações. Aqui estão algumas das primeiras semanas que Harry está em Hogwarts.

It was very difficult. Harry and Seamus swished and flicked, but the feather they were supposed to be sending skyward just lay on the desktop. Seamus got so impatient that he prodded it with his wand and set fire to it -- Harry had to put it out with his hat.

Este é um tema contínuo - personagens lançando feitiços que apenas metade trabalham, ou 80% trabalham, e o foco do ensino parece ser trazer até 100%. Em outras palavras, não se trata apenas de fazer um feitiço funcionar, mas sim de fazê-lo funcionar direito , de uma maneira consistente.
Eu não incluirei mais citações, já que é mais uma questão de empilhar pequenas coisas do que quaisquer grandes explicações (preciso manter essa mágica vaga).
