A viagem no tempo é estranha e difícil de entender, mas aqui vai.

Os seus eus futuros só salvaram Buckbeak porque os seus eus passados voltaram no tempo para o fazerem. O Harry e Hermione que salvaram Buckbeak são os mesmos Harry e Hermione que voltaram no tempo para salvá-lo, apenas em um ponto diferente em seus próprios fluxos de tempo.

Se eles não tivessem voltado no tempo, seus futuros eus não teriam estado lá no passado e Buckbeak não teria sido salvo, afinal. Eles tinham para voltar no tempo, para que o que já aconteceu realmente acontecesse. Esqueça a causalidade: assim que você introduzir a viagem no tempo, não haverá mais causalidade.

Potter e Hermione não viajaram no tempo para salvar Buckbeak principalmente. Eles foram salvar Sirius,

Ele explica para Hermione que ele percebeu que ele realmente se viu, e saber que ele fez isso deu a ele a confiança que ele precisava para conjurar um Patrono completo.

Não havia sentido na linha do tempo em que Harry não havia escalado o Patrono, mas ele ainda teve que lançá-lo. A mesma coisa teria acontecido com Buckbeak - ele estava sempre vivo porque Harry o salvou, mas Harry ainda tinha que realmente voltar e salvá-lo para que ele fosse salvo. Mas ele sempre foi salvo por eles - eles ouviram o carrasco balançando o machado na cerca.

Mas nada disso teria acontecido se eles não voltassem e salvassem Buckbeak, porque Buckbeak só tinha ido embora porque Harry e Hermione voltaram e desamarraram ele.

Dumbledore era um homem inteligente

Dumbledore sabia que Buckbeak havia escapado, mas ele presumivelmente não tinha a menor idéia de como. Não é como se houvesse uma infinidade de pessoas em Hogwarts que teriam, ou poderiam ter desatado Buckbeak precisamente no minuto entre o momento em que o carrasco confirmou que Buckbeak estava lá e quando ele saiu para fazer a execução:

We’ve got to wait until they’ve seen he’s tied outside!”

“That’s going to give us about sixty seconds,” said Harry. This was starting to seem impossible.

Dumbledore, sendo Dumbledore, tentou criar uma teoria para explicar o que havia acontecido. Como encontramos anteriormente em Prisioneiro de Azkaban :

“Have you any theory as to how he got in, Professor?” asked Snape.

Harry raised his head very slightly off his arms to free his other ear.

“Many, Severus, each of them as unlikely as the next.”

Quando Dumbledore ouviu a história de Sirius, Harry e Hermione, ele decidiu que eles poderiam usar a viagem no tempo para salvar Sirius. Uma vez que ele decidiu viajar no tempo, ele deve ter percebido que essa poderia ser a explicação perfeitamente razoável de como Buckbeak escapou - alguém do futuro que sabia exatamente o que estava acontecendo, libertou Buckbeak durante a janela de um minuto.

Baseado nessa possibilidade, Dumbledore disse a Harry e Hermione para salvar Buckbeak também (ele não contou diretamente a eles; ele sugeriu a eles).

Essencialmente, Dumbledore teve um palpite bem fundamentado, que não teve problemas, e tudo deu certo.
