A premissa do livro era a seguinte: um cientista cria uma máquina do tempo e viaja até a época de Jesus para ver se ele é real. Ao chegar, ele não encontra Jesus. Ele então decide ser Jesus e segue com a obra de Jesus e é crucificado.
