Tudo que vimos de Kylo aponta strongmente para ele ser um indivíduo altamente conflituoso e desequilibrado, tentando encontrar seu lugar e propósito no universo. Nós vemos isso desde o início em seu treinamento com Lucas.
Existem muitos exemplos para mostrar que ele realmente atraiu o passado para motivá-lo (sua idolatria de Vader, querer seu sabre e copiar seu visual), e não é até os eventos do filme mais recente que qualquer um desses mudanças.
Claro, você poderia argumentar que tudo fazia parte de algum tipo de trapaceiro, tudo antes ...
Snoke's death
... incluindo todas as explosões emocionais em seu tempo sozinho e em torno de outros. Mas o fato de ele continuar tão desequilibrado como ele é (embora com um pouco mais de direção e convicção) dá credibilidade a ele ser genuíno. Ser tão controlado a ponto de manipular de maneira tão profunda também exigiria muito tempo e experiência, e ele ainda é bastante jovem.

both before and after Snoke's death, Kylo seems to have no real solid ambitions to rule the galaxy. The emphasis of the whole movie is that he's a hurting and broken person, trying to find something that will quench that desire for purpose and knowing his place. He's the mirror to Rey, who is in much the same boat, but chooses light. After Snoke calls him out for his failures and mocks him for the mask, and finally in the scene just prior to his death, is when he finally decides he's done with the past and wants to take control of his own destiny. And ultimately we already have a very clear and solid reason to believe why he did what he did, which was to protect Rey, someone he's grown to care about and identify with, and who he feels actually cares about him in return.
