É uma questão interessante. E eu diria que ele sabia sobre o véu da morte, pelas seguintes razões:
"It's been there as long as the Ministry itself."
Isso é o que J. K. Rowling diz sobre o véu, então parece que não é algo que poderia ser encoberto se estivesse lá por tanto tempo.
A razão secreta é um pouco mais improvável. Na página wiki do veil diz-se que o véu teve algumas aparições no folclore de Wizarding, incluindo os Tales of Beedle the Bard. (O conto dos três irmãos). Agora, olhando para minha cópia do livro, o único véu que vi mencionado foi:
Meanwhile, the second brother journeyed to his own home, where he lived alone. Here he took out the stone that had the power to recall the dead, and turned it thrice in his hand. To his amazement and his delight, the figure of the girl he had once hoped to marry before her untimely death appeared at once before him. Yet she was silent and cold, separated from him as though by a veil. Though she had returned to the mortal world, she did not truly belong there and suffered.
Não é mencionado pelo nome completo, mas, como era bem conhecido o suficiente para ser incluído em um livro infantil, (e foi colocado como referência e aparência) eu diria que todos sabiam disso; ou pelo menos todo mundo que cresceu no mundo mágico e ouviu essas histórias.
Como foi mencionado no comentário de ibid acima, "Lupin e Dumbledore parecem saber" e isso prova a minha teoria.
