Quem seria o rei de Rohan após a morte de Theoden?

Embora seja importante notar que Éomer é na verdade o sobrinho de Théoden, não seu filho. O filho de Théoden foi Théodred, que morreu fora da tela (ou fora da página) durante o eventos da Sociedade do Anel

Só há uma vez em que posso pensar onde seria sensato dizer que Éowyn sucedeu Théoden como rei (bem, rainha), e isso está em Duas Torres quando Théoden e Éomer partem para a casa de Helm. Deep:

'Behold! I go forth, and it seems like to be my last riding,' said Théoden. 'I have no child. Théodred my son is slain. I name Éomer my sister-son to be my heir. 'Is there none whom you would name? In whom do my people trust?'

'In the House of Eorl,' answered Háma.

'But Éomer I cannot spare, nor would he stay,' said the king; 'and he is the last of that House.'

'I said not Éomer,' answered Háma. 'And he is not the last. There is Éowyn, daughter of Éomund, his sister. She is fearless and high-hearted. All love her. Let her be as lord to the Eorlingas, while we are gone.'

'It shall be so,' said Théoden. 'Let the heralds announce to the folk that the Lady Éowyn will lead them!'

Mas, como indicado pela conversa acima, ela foi escolhida para liderar apenas porque Éomer, herdeiro nomeado do rei, foi para a guerra. Podemos imaginar que, se Ele tivesse sido morto na Batalha do Pelennor, Éowyn teria subido ao trono.

Existem duas linhas de túmulos nos salões onde os reis da Marca estão enterrados. Cada linha representa a descendência linear, de pai para filho. A primeira linha começa com Eorl. Quando essa linha foi quebrada, como não havia filho vivo, a segunda linha começou. A segunda linha terminou com Theoden porque ele não tinha filho vivo. Éomer começou a terceira linha.

Parece que Éowyn foi nomeado regente até que o resultado da batalha seja conhecido. Se a batalha for bem e Théoden retornar, ele continuará em sua posição como rei. O que não ficou claro para mim foi o que ele quis dizer quando a batalha ficou doente; a batalha vai mal significa que ele morre, ou que ele e Éomer são mortos? A julgar pela história, o posterior foi o caso, como Éomer sobrevive e se torna rei.
