O Sábio
De fundo, em O Senhor dos Anéis "o Sábio" é uma referência ao Conselho Branco, mas o uso anterior é mais geral.
Quando Tolkien se refere a "o Sábio" 1 , ele está se referindo ao Conselho Branco, também chamado de o Conselho dos Sábios. Isso fica claro no Apêndice B, de todos os lugares:
c. T.A 1100 The Wise (the Istari and the chief Eldar) discover that an evil power has made a stronghold at Dol Guldur. It is thought to be one of the Nazgûl.

Galadriel indeed had wished that Mithrandir should be the Lead of the Council, and Saruman begrudged them that, for his pride and desire of mastery was grown great; but Mithrandir refused the office, since he would have no ties and no allegiance, save to those who sent him, and he would abide in no place nor be subject to any summons. But Saruman now began to study the lore of the Rings of Power, their making and their history.

A citação do Apêndice B sugere que Radagast e os Magos Azuis também faziam parte do Conselho, e é interessante que eles não sejam mencionados em O Silmarillion . É claro que eles não são muito importantes, então ao discutir o Conselho, geralmente é seguro omiti-los.
Curiosamente, o nome "o Sábio" foi aplicado pelos primeiros homens ao povo de Finrod Felagund, o senhor de Nargothrond na Primeira Era:
Thus it was that Men called King Felagund, whom they first met of all the Eldar, Nóm, that is Wisdom, in the language of that people, and after him they named his folk Nómin, the Wise. Não está claro no texto se "o povo de Finrod" se aplica apenas aos Eldar (que seriam os Noldor e os Sindar, já que são todos os Eldar aos quais os Homens teriam sido expostos), ou todos os Elfos, ou apenas os moradores de Nargothrond.
Parte de História da Terra Média sugere que esta é uma referência exclusivamente ao Noldor:
The Noldor are the Wise, and the Golden, the Valient, the Sword-elves, the Elves of the Earth, the Foes of Melkor, the Skilled of Hand, the Jewel-wrights, the Companions of Men, the Followers of Finwë.

Os Eldar
Inicialmente, "Eldar" se referia a todos Elfos encontrados pelo Vala Oromë. Com o tempo, estreitou-se para se referir apenas aos elfos que iniciaram a Grande Jornada, a viagem a Aman que nem todos os Elfos começaram:
In the beginning the Elder Children of Ilúvatar were stronger and greater than they have since become; but not more fair, for though the beauty of the Quendi in the days of their youth was beyond all other beauty that Ilúvatar has caused to be, it has not perished, but lives in the West, and sorrow and wisdom have enriched it. And Oromë loved the Quendi, and named them in their own tongue Eldar, the people of the stars; but that name was after borne only by those who followed him upon the westward road.

Note que não há discussão sobre completar a viagem para Aman. O resultado é que, para todos os efeitos práticos, "Elfos" e "Eldar" são de fato intercambiáveis; com exatamente duas exceções 2 , todo chamado Elf no Legendarium é contado entre os Eldar.
