Isto é explicado em "Time Crash", o 2007 Children in Need special, que acontece imediatamente antes de "Voyage of the Damned". O enredo do especial gira em torno da TARDIS da era de Tennant fundindo-se com a TARDIS da era de Peter Davison (o Quinto Doctor); Tennant explica como isso é possível (ênfase minha):
Doctor 5: In a minute we're going to create a black hole strong enough to swallow the entire universe!
Doctor: Yeah, that's my fault, actually. I was rebuilding the Tardis, forgot to put the shields back up.

No final do especial, Davison faz um último jab em Tennant e lembra que ele ainda não colocou os escudos:
Doctor 5 [OC]: Oh, Doctor, remember to put your shields up.
(But just as he presses the button, there is the sound of a ships horn and a prow comes crashing into the console room.)
