Como a companhia de hobbits (Frodo, Sam, Merry e Pippin) continuou sua expedição da casa de Tom Bombadil e chegou ao Barrow Downs, eles encontraram um Barrow Wight que pode ter sido fortalecido por uma visita recente do Rei Witch. de Angmar, chefe dos Nazgull.

The Black Captain did not know whether the Ring was still in the Shire; he had to find out. The Shire was too large for a violent onslaught...; he must use as much stealth and as little terror as he could, and yet also guard the eastern borders. Therefore he sent some of the Riders into the Shire, with orders to disperse while conversing it; and of these Khamul was to find Hobbiton where "Baggins" lived. ... But the Black Captain established a camp at Andrath, where the Greenway passed in a defile between the Barrow-Downs and the South Downs; and from there some others were sent to watch and patrol the eastern borders, while he himself visited the Barrow-downs.

A citação de The Hunt for the Ring continua dizendo que

...the Black Captain stayed there for some days, and the Barrow-wights were roused, and all things of evil spirit, hostile to Elves and Men, were on the watch with malice in the Old Forest and on the Barrow-downs.

O Apêndice B nos fornece algumas datas relevantes:

22 de setembro: Os Cavaleiros Negros alcançam Sarn Ford à noite; eles expulsam a guarda dos Rangers.

23 de setembro: Quatro cavaleiros entram no Condado antes do amanhecer. Os outros perseguem os Rangers em direção ao leste e depois voltam para vigiar o Greenway. Um Cavaleiro Negro chega a Hobbiton ao cair da noite.

28 de setembro: Os Hobbits capturados por uma Criatura Barrow.

30 de setembro: Gandalf chega a Bree à noite.

A Caçada ao Anel também nos diz que o Rei Bruxo estava em Sarn Ford durante a escaramuça:

Some dared to bar the ford, and held it while the day lasted, but at night the Lord of Morgul swept them away.

Desde que ele estava lutando na noite de 22, o mais cedo que ele pode razoavelmente ser esperado para visitar os Barrow-downs seria no dia 23, embora possa ser mais tarde, se ele estava envolvido em perseguir rangers ou acamparam em Andreth para qualquer quantidade significativa de tempo.

The Captain then sent some eastward straight across country, and he himself with the rest rode along the Road in great wrath.

Isso coloca o Rei Bruxo na área dos Barrow-downs ou Andrath até 30 de setembro, após a jornada dos Hobbits. Christopher Tolkien identifica o local secreto com o acampamento na Nota 22 da Caçada ao Anel, o que faz algum sentido. Mas está aberta a possibilidade de que o Rei Bruxo estivesse nos Downs, muito próximo ao mesmo tempo que Frodo.
