No capítulo 5 do Guia dos Mochileiros da Galáxia, Ford Prefect mostra ao Arthur o Guia:

Ford handed the book to Arthur.
"What is it?" asked Arthur.
"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's a sort of electronic book. It tells you everything you need to know about anything. That's its job."
Arthur turned it over nervously in his hands. "I like the cover," he said. "Don't Panic. It's the first helpful or intelligible thing anybody's said to me all day."

A screen, about three inches by four, lit up and characters began to flicker across the surface.
"You want to know about Vogons, so I enter that name so." His fingers tapped some more keys. "And there we are."
The words Vogon Constructor Fleets flared in green across the screen.
Ford pressed a large red button at the bottom of the screen and words began to undulate across it. At the same time, the book began to speak the entry as well in a still quiet measured voice. This is what the book said.
"Vogon Constructor Fleets. Here is what to do if you want to get a lift from a Vogon: forget it. They are one of the most unpleasant races ..."

Arthur blinked at it.
"What a strange book. How did we get a lift then?"

Assim, o guia tem "Don't Panic" em inglês na capa, e mostra personagens e fala em uma linguagem que Ford Prefect supõe que Arthur entende quando o transforma em antes colocar o Babelfish em Ouvido de Artur (que acontece no final do capítulo).

Portanto, o guia é em inglês?

Neste ponto do romance, Arthur ainda não recebeu um babelfish e não tem talentos linguísticos óbvios para falar Betelgeusiano (ou mesmo qualquer outra língua alienígena). Portanto, é lógico que ambas as páginas do Guia e sua capa frontal tenham sido escritas em inglês para que ele as leia e entenda.

Isso, presumivelmente, é mais fácil de ser traduzido por si mesmo, seja porque Ford forneceu amostras de inglês ou, mais provavelmente, o livro é inteligente o suficiente para tirar suas próprias amostras (talvez de sinais de TV ou Sub-Etha próximos). e fazer suposições sobre seus prováveis leitores.

Observe que o guia não é um trabalho impresso, mas sim um e-book. Sua capacidade de ser lido por praticamente qualquer pessoa (e dizer praticamente qualquer coisa que você precise saber sobre qualquer coisa) é tanto um ponto-chave de venda quanto uma característica importante.

Em um dos livros posteriores, onde eles entram nos escritórios da Enciclopédia, é explicado como sendo auto-traduzido de milhares de idiomas. Algum tipo de mumbo-jumbo dimensional extra envolvido.
