Pode alguém simplesmente deixar a Guarda Real?

Não, seus votos são votos para a vida. Eles não podem sair / se aposentar.

O rei (praticamente faz o que ele quiser, então ele) pode dispensar alguém da guarda, como Joffrey fez com Selmy; ou como Tywin queria fazer com Jaime, quando o primeiro era rei regente.

Mas uma pessoa não pode sair sozinha. É por isso que eles estavam atrás de Sandor depois que ele deixou a Guarda Real.

Quando a Guarda Real foi fundada pela dinastia Targaryan, os votos que eles fizeram foram muito parecidos com os da Patrulha da Noite:

• Eles serviram até a morte - tecnicamente até mesmo um membro doente ou permanentemente incapacitado ainda era uma Guarda Real desde que ele estivesse vivo.
• Eles não podiam ter terras, apesar de aparentemente possuírem certos títulos (Jaime foi nomeado Guardião do Leste depois da morte de Jon Arryn e eu acredito que várias Guardas-Reais também eram Mão do Rei)
• Eles não poderiam se casar nem com filhos de pai.

No entanto, o rei pode despedir uma Guarda Real a qualquer momento, desde que eles servem ao rei em seu prazer. Se o acordo de Jaime com o pai tivesse saído como planejado, teria sido fácil o suficiente para que Tommen o dispensasse na próxima oportunidade possível.

A partir disso, podemos supor o seguinte:

• O rei e / ou o pequeno conselho podem libertar um membro da Guarda Real
• Votos são tomados para a vida tão só morte pode aliviá-los do dever
• Os votos podem ser aplicados ao Rei ou Guarda Real ...
• Os votos são semelhantes aos votos da Vigília das Noites: perder todas as reivindicações, sem terra / esposas / filhos, servir / proteger o reino, terminar com a morte, etc.

Então, tecnicamente, alguém poderia deixar o kingsguard, mas eles teriam que manipular o Rei ou cair em sua própria espada.

Legalmente? Não.

Fisicamente? Claro.

While the Hound wasn't kingsquard he is Joffery's personal guard and snaps and leaves. And is pretty good at it until meeting Brienne. And one could use the same loophole Jon Snow used to get out. I'm sure the large army backing him up helped to. But the facts remains. No matter what the laws say if you are powerful enough that no one can challenge you you can to whatever you wan.
