Spell never provoke, and neither do ranged attacks. You do have Disadvantage on any attack rolls made with ranged attacks and ranged spells while in melee, but that only matters for spells that make any.
Can you cast shatter where you can't see?
No, you cannot. To target something, you must have a clear path to it, so it can't be behind total cover. If you place an area of effect at a point that you can't see and an obstruction, such as a wall, is between you and that point, the point of origin comes into being on the near side of that obstruction. Can you cast fireball around a corner? Now, the bright streak can't go around corners, or through walls or other examples of total cover (some DMs might allow an exception and let it go through something like a keyhole), but the explosion can and does go around corners.
