Gandalf pode realmente aparecer do nada como em 'O Hobbit'

Não, em nenhum lugar dos livros Gandalf aparece do nada ou usa invisibilidade para se esconder. Bilbo faz isso várias vezes tanto no Hobbit quanto no Senhor dos Anéis, Frodo algumas vezes (obviamente usando o Um Anel em ambos os casos), mas não em Gandalf.

Suddenly without a signal they sprang silently forward to attack. Bows twanged and arrows whistled; battle was about to be joined. Still more suddenly a darkness came on with dreadful swiftness! A black cloud hurried over the sky. Winter thunder on a wild wind rolled roaring up and rumbled in the Mountain, and lightning lit its peak. And beneath the thunder another blackness could be seen whirling forward; but it did not come with the wind, it came from the North, like a vast cloud of birds, so dense that no light could be seen between their wings.

"Halt!" cried Gandalf, who appeared suddenly, and stood alone, with arms uplifted, between the advancing dwarves and the ranks awaiting them. "Halt!" he called in a voice like thunder, and his staff blazed forth with a flash like the lightning. "Dread has come upon you all! Alas! it has come more swiftly than I guessed. The Goblins are upon you! Bolg of the North is coming. O Dain! whose father you slew in Moria. Behold! the bats are above his army like a sea of locusts. They ride upon wolves and Wargs are in their train!" Amazement and confusion fell upon them all. Even as Gandalf had been speaking the darkness grew. The dwarves halted and gazed at the sky. The elves cried out with many voices."

E Olorin-as-Gandalf? Novamente no Silmarillion, desta vez na Valaquenta, lemos o seguinte:

for though he loved the Elves, he walked among them unseen, or in form as one of them, and they did not know whence came the fair visions or the promptings of wisdom that he put into their hearts. In later days he was the friend of all the Children of Iluvatar, and took pity on their sorrows; and those who listened to him awoke from despair and put away the imaginations of darkness.

Assim, parece que a invisibilidade é definitivamente algo de que ele é capaz, mesmo quando restrito em sua forma como Gandalf.

Como diz dianod, Gandalf não faz isso em nenhum lugar dos livros. É uma questão interessante se ele seria capaz. Sabemos que pelo menos um Anel de Poder - o Um Anel - tem a capacidade de conceder invisibilidade, pelo menos para os Hobbits. Então as perguntas são: o Anel que Gandalf carrega, Narya, seria capaz de conceder esse poder também: e, poderia conceder a Gandalf ou a invisibilidade algo específico para os Hobbits?

Para a segunda pergunta, temos o contra-exemplo de Isildur, que ficou invisível até que o Anel escorregou de seu dedo após os Campos de Pelennor. Eu especulei anteriormente que a invisibilidade vem naturalmente para os Hobbits como uma extensão de sua discrição natural, mas claramente não é exclusiva para eles e podemos imaginar que alguém tão poderoso quanto Gandalf seria capaz de acessar esse poder, se possível.

O que nos traz de volta à primeira pergunta. Narya é capaz de conceder invisibilidade? Nós não sabemos explicitamente. É descrito como tendo o poder de inspirar os outros a resistir à tirania, mas nada a respeito de poderes explícitos. Mas, por outro lado, parece provável que a invisibilidade fosse um poder padrão dos Grandes Anéis: Gandalf foi capaz de identificar o anel de Bilbo como um só com base nisso, mesmo antes de saber que era o Um.
