No filme de 1982, o Thing tem sexo ou sexo?

Não há informações canônicas sobre isso, mas parece altamente improvável. O Coisa se reproduz pelo mero contato físico com outro organismo, por isso não tem razão para se reproduzir sexualmente. Isso sugere que a ideia de sexos e gêneros é totalmente desnecessária e irrelevante para a Coisa.

Na medida em que a Coisa tem gênero ou sexo, não é fixa, mas depende de quem ou do que ela está fingindo ser - no filme de 1982, todo ser humano que foi assimilado pela Coisa era homem; no entanto, não sabemos se todos os cães, incluindo os cães que foram assimilados, eram do sexo masculino. No prequel de 2011, ele assimila uma mulher, e esta é a única vez que vemos a Coisa fingindo ser uma mulher humana.

No mundo real, os organismos que geralmente se reproduzem assexuadamente são sem gênero e sem sexo. Este é provavelmente o caso da Coisa também.

A novela oficial do filme (de Alan Dean Foster) refere-se explicitamente à Coisa como um ", sem sexo atribuído:

*Then the roof gave way and it dropped into their midst. Instinctively the three stunned men threw themselves away from the dark mass occupying the middle of the room. As he stumbled backward Macready heaved his Molotov and from the other side of the room Nauls did the same.*
