Snape poderia ter matado esse personagem para salvar a vida de outro?

Não é provável.

1. Foi tudo confusão. Eu duvido seriamente que Snape teria arriscado bater e matar Harry.

2. Hedwig estava em uma gaiola , como ficou claro na última citação.

   Então, matar a coruja não teria ajudado a prevenir "para que ela não desse Harry na luta que se seguiu no céu", portanto a motivação na teoria dos fãs não faz sentido .

3. Além disso, Snape acabou lutando contra Lupin e George, e os pares se separaram imediatamente, então Snape não poderia ter tido muito tempo para atacar Harry (ou a coruja) naquele momento:

Além da resposta de DVK (não posso comentar ainda!), até onde sei, Snape não pretendia matar e não usar a maldição da morte. Visando uma vassoura / no vôo era muito difícil, e resultou nele acidentalmente cortando a orelha de Georges com Sectumsempra
