Chernobyl é o exemplo de uma verdadeira Terra Ofuscada. Há uma zona de exclusão de 18 milhas ao redor do reator derretido que é considerado não apto para habitação humana (isso é obviamente ignorado pelos animais, que parecem estar prosperando, mas isso é outro ponto). Eu posso pensar em dois exemplos de ficção fora do topo da minha cabeça, onde a intromissão humana destruiu absolutamente um local, e ambos foram escritos depois de Chernobyl. Estou curioso para saber se, da mesma forma que a morte foi personificada pela primeira vez durante a peste européia, o conceito de uma terra arruinada / destruída foi cristalizado e recebeu uma forma e aparência pela consciência pública de Chernobyl.

A história da bela adormecida pode vir de 1528, de acordo com a Wikipédia . Em pelo menos uma variação, todo o reino onde a princesa vivia foi adormecido por um século inteiro ou mais. E para evitar a intrusão do lado de fora:

The fairy also summons a forest of trees, brambles and thorns that spring up around the castle, shielding it from the outside world and preventing anyone from disturbing the Princess.

Embora não seja o tipo de praga onde há morte e decadência, isso causou um tempo civilizado para passar muito tempo - mais do que o tempo normal de vida de uma pessoa - sem nenhuma atividade humana perceptível. 1930: Último e Primeiro Homens: Uma História do Near and Far Future, um romance de Olaf Stapledon, disponível em Project Gutenberg Australia , tem uma página da Wikipédia . No final do capítulo V, a maior parte do planeta é esterilizada por um acidente na Patagônia:

A petty dispute had occurred in one of the new mines. The management refused to allow miners to teach their trade to their sons; for vocational education, it was said, should be carried on professionally. The first explosion was enough to blow up the mountain range above the mine. In those mountains were huge tracts of the critical element, and these were detonated by rays from the initial explosion. This sufficed to set in action still more remote tracts of the elements. An incandescent hurricane spread over the whole of Patagonia, reinforcing itself with fresh atomic fury wherever it went, It raged along the line of the Andes and the Rockies, scorching both continents with its heat. It undermined and blew up the Behring Straits, spread like a brood of gigantic fiery serpents into Asia, Europe and Africa. Martians, already watching the earth as a cat a bird beyond its spring, noted that the brilliance of the neighbour planet was suddenly enhanced. Presently the oceans began to boil here and there with submarine commotion. Tidal waves mangled the coasts and floundered up the valleys. But in time the general sea level sank considerably through evaporation and the opening of chasms in the ocean floor. All volcanic regions became fantastically active. The polar caps began to melt, but prevented the arctic regions from being calcined like the rest of the planet. The atmosphere was a continuous dense cloud of moisture, fumes and dust, churned in ceaseless hurricanes. As the fury of the electromagnetic collapse proceeded, the surface temperature of the planet steadily increased, till only in the Arctic and a few favoured corners of the sub-Arctic could life persist.

Patagonia's death agony was brief. In Africa and Europe a few remote settlements escaped the actual track of the eruptions, but succumbed in a few weeks to the hurricanes of steam. Of the two hundred million members of the human race, all were burnt or roasted or suffocated within three months--all but thirty-five, who happened to be in the neighbourhood of the North Pole.

Once an area was dusted there was nothing that could be done about it until the radioactivity had fallen off to the point where it was no longer harmful. The dust could not be cleaned out; it was everywhere. There was no possible way to counteract it—burn it, combine it chemically; the radioactive isotope was still there, still radioactive, still deadly. Once used on a stretch of land, for a predetermined length of time that piece of earth would not tolerate life.

O conceito de "terra explodida" foi usado bem antes de Chernobyl, que ocorreu em 1986. As pessoas usaram isso na ficção sobre a guerra pós-nuclear desde que a bomba atômica se tornou conhecida.

Andre Norton usou o conceito "Blasted Land" em vários de seus romances. Por exemplo, seu primeiro romance de ficção científica, Daybreak 2250 AD (também conhecido como Filho de Star Man 2250 AD ou apenas Star Man's Son ) por volta de 1952. Ela também a usou em romances como Navio da Praga em que uma seção da Terra foi destruída durante uma guerra nuclear e a radiação a torna inabitável (além de todos os monstros mutantes que florescem lá).

Muitas histórias usaram a ideia como pano de fundo no qual uma guerra nuclear do passado criou uma área que não pode ser reassentada por causa do nível de radiação e dos monstros (ou mutantes "humanos") que sobrevivem lá.

A história conta a visita do narrador ao "Lugar dos Deuses", também conhecido como "Newyork". Timeaus e Critias 360 aC

Aqui estão alguns que eu lembro:

Autor, título e datas esquecidas: Uma série de histórias em que o sudeste da Pensilvânia foi devastado por um acidente em uma usina nuclear. Provavelmente após Three Mile Island (1979) e antes de Chernobyl (1986).

Earthman Come Home de James Blish (1953, 1955) tem o Blasted Heath em um planeta distante causado pela queda de uma cidade em outra cidade.

Isaac Asimov primeiro descreveu uma Terra predominantemente radioativa em Pebble in the Sky (1950). Isso é antes do Starman's Son de Andre Norton em 1952.

Em Fantasy J.R.R. Tolkien teve o Heath Definhado, onde os grandes Dragões se reproduzem, e a Desolação do Dragão ao redor de Erebor, em O Hobbit (1937).

1856: Um conto de ficção histórica por Jókai retrata um evento durante as conquistas de Pizarro , onde os Incas, como último movimento desesperado, incendiaram um enorme depósito subterrâneo de enxofre, destruindo todo o país e torná-lo inabitável por muitos séculos, talvez milênios. Existem histórias antigas (1000 aC) de conquistadores de uma cidade semeando sal nas terras vizinhas para torná-las inférteis a longo prazo: link . (Isso não funcionaria na verdade, dada a quantidade de sal disponível, mas as histórias ainda surgiam, e os conquistadores, evidentemente, faziam isso simbolicamente para amaldiçoar a terra.)
