Por que Gollum não levou o anel de volta de Bilbo entre O Hobbit e O Senhor dos Anéis?

Ele fez eventualmente (depois de alguns anos: lembre-se que Gollum tem um ódio e medo do Sol, da Lua e de outras criaturas, por isso levou algum tempo) deixar as Montanhas Sombrias em busca de Bilbo Bolseiro, mas acabou sendo levado para o sul, em direção a Mordor, porque todo o mal estava sendo atraído para Mordor, na época. Foi assim que ele descobriu a escada secreta de Minas Morgul e como ele encontrou Shelob.

Tudo isso é descrito em um capítulo do primeiro livro da série de livros de Tolkien O Senhor dos Anéis chamado "Sombra do Passado"

Em algum ponto durante esta viagem, ele foi capturado e levado para Barad-dur, onde foi torturado e obrigado a revelar a Sauron as duas palavras "Shire" e "Baggins".

Conhecemos tudo isso porque Aragorn capturou Gollum, a pedido de Gandalf (Gandalf pergunta isso a Aragorn pouco depois da festa de aniversário de Bilbo) e Gollum confessou tudo isso, e Gandalf, com seu conhecimento divino, fez muita dedução .

No momento em que Gollum foi libertado e ele retomou sua perseguição, o anel já havia deixado o Shire nas mãos de Frodo, que estava sendo escoltado como membro da The Fellowship. É por isso que, nos filmes, encontramos Gollum seguindo a irmandade em Moria, o que leva à seguinte cena e diálogo:
