1. Literalmente
Stephen King usa a palavra "float" várias vezes para dizer que um objeto (como um balão ou um log) literalmente flutua. Algumas citações onde isso é visto são as seguintes:

2. Para instigar a presença dela

3. Como pretende
A maneira final em que "float" é usado no romance pode ser interpretada a partir de suas intenções quando ele diz "todos nós flutuamos aqui". Embora "flutuar", como ele usa, possa ser interpretado como literalmente flutuando no esgoto (ou pairando como o filme o descreve), o significado que Stephen King está tentando transmitir ao leitor é provavelmente um pouco mais do que isso.
Para "flutuar" como Pennywise pretende é flutuar nos Deadlights. Os Deadlights do romance são um lugar no fundo do macroverse - de onde veio originalmente - cheio de luz laranja. Stephen King retrata ao leitor que tem duas formas:
- Sua forma física na Terra
- Sua forma cosmológica nos Deadlights
Você quase poderia dizer que flutua entre os dois, e é isso que ele pretende essencialmente de suas vítimas; seus corpos podem ser destruídos, mas tem domínio sobre suas mentes nos Deadlights - suas vítimas flutuam na mediana entre a morte física e a metafísica, nunca verdadeiramente livres.
Você pode ver esse conceito em ação no filme, quando separa Beverly dos outros e mostra a ela as luzes laranja giratórias em sua boca - os Deadlights - aos quais ela está temporariamente perdida.
