Bilbo matou as aranhas da Floresta das Trevas em grande número. Sam tinha a mesma arma, Sting, e no momento em que ele lutou contra ela, ele tinha mais treinamento de armas do que Bilbo quando salvou os anões em Mirkwood. Por que Samwise não conseguiu matar Shelob, uma aranha solitária? Ela não era apenas mais uma aranha gigante?

Resposta curta: Não, ela não era apenas mais uma aranha gigante. Wikipedia aponta que ela é muito, muito mais velha que as aranhas de Mirkwood, que são, na verdade, seus descendentes.

O Shelob é descrito como o último filho de Ungoliant , e geralmente é tomado literalmente como significando que ela é filha direta da Ungoliant . Ungoliant era muito mais do que apenas uma aranha, sendo descrita como um "espírito primordial da noite" que existia de "antes do mundo".

Então, não, Shelob era definitivamente mais poderoso que as aranhas de Mirkwood, e é impressionante como Sam era capaz de ficar cara a cara com ela.

Tolkien sugere que as aranhas da Floresta das Trevas eram descendentes de Shelob e não eram tão grandes ou formidáveis quanto a própria Shelob:

Far and wide her lesser broods, bastards of miserable mates, her own offspring, that she slew, spread from glen to glen, from the Ephel Duath to the eastern hills, to Dol Guldur and the fastness of Mirkwood. Oficialmente, as aranhas da Floresta das Trevas eram descendentes de Shelob. Ela foi descrita como "uma coisa má em forma de aranha" e a descendência de uma criatura aranha ainda mais poderosa chamada Ungoliant. As aranhas da Floresta das Trevas eram basicamente criaturas mortais, como orcs de oito patas. Mas Shelob era mais como um espírito maligno na forma física.

Eu acho que eu concordaria com a maioria dos pôsteres aqui. Shelob não era apenas uma aranha, tanto quanto Golem não era apenas um hobbit. Toda a linguagem nos livros implica strongmente que ela era uma criatura espiritual mágica que parecia uma aranha. Se algo estou frustrado pela facilidade com que ela foi "derrotada" por Sam.

Sting se saiu muito bem contra Shelob, considerando todas as coisas - Hobbits pequenos e não treinados contra a aranha gigante , muito maior que as aranhas da Floresta das Trevas.

Heaving up again, wrenching away from the pain, she bent her writhing limbs beneath her and sprang backwards in a convulsive leap.
