A "esperança secreta" compartilhada por Merry, Pippin e Gandalf só pode significar o plano para destruir o Um Anel.
Isso deixa o negócio do que, exatamente, Gandalf fez dizer a Théoden. Infelizmente não estou ciente de uma resposta canônica, mas tenho visto muita especulação:
