O portão leste era o portão original, construído quando Durin, o Imortal, e primeiro descobriu Moria depois de olhar para o Mirrormere no início da Primeira Era. Era a única maneira de entrar e sair e seria strongmente vigiada como a entrada de qualquer reino / fortaleza.

Qualquer força invasora que conseguisse ultrapassar o portão seria reduzida a um único arquivo e facilmente removida pelos defensores. Como último recurso, a ponte poderia ser quebrada. (Como Gandalf eventualmente faz.) Qualquer um tentando entrar sorrateiramente teria que atravessar a ponte onde eles seriam expostos (assumindo que eles não são invisíveis) e facilmente detectados por qualquer guarda.
