De vez em quando, desde a publicação do 'Ósanwe-kenta', eu me perguntava quais eventos na Terra-média tinham ligações com a telepatia.
Além do óbvio - Frodo colocando o anel em Amon Hen, Gandalf & Co. conversando silenciosamente entre si, conversas entre Pippin & Sauron e Aragorn & Sauron, etc. - Sauron usou telepatia Legilimência ósanwe como uma técnica aprimorada de interrogatório em Barad-dûr?
Como Maia, Sauron certamente era capaz de usar ósanwe. Como ex-tenente de Morgoth, ele saberia que forçar segredos diretamente de uma mente relutante era impossível.
In like manner, extortion of the secrets of a mind may seem to come from reading it by force in despite of its unwill, for the knowledge gained may at times appear to be as complete as any that could be obtained. Nonetheless it does not come from penetration of the barrier of unwill.
There is indeed no axan [rule or law] that the barrier should not be forced, for it is únat, a thing impossible to be or to be done, and the greater the force exerted, the greater the resistance of the unwill. But it is an axan universal that none shall directly by force or indirectly by fraud take from another what he has a right to hold and keep as his own.
Ele também estaria ciente das tentativas de Morgoth de dominar mentes inferiores, conforme detalhado em "Ósanwe-kenta".
He found that the open approach of a sáma of power and great force of will was felt by a lesser sáma as an immense pressure, accompanied by fear. To dominate by weight of power and fear was his delight; but in this case he found them unavailing: fear closed the door faster.
Therefore he tried deceit and stealth. . . . For he would come by stealth to a mind open and unwary, hoping to learn some part of its thought before it closed, and still more to implant in it his own thought, to deceive it and win it to his friendship.
. . . In this way he won entry into many minds, removing their unwill, and unlocking the door by the only key, though his key was counterfeit.
A principal evidência que encontrei de Sauron usando ósanwe no que diz respeito aos prisioneiros, vem da ameaça do rei bruxo a Éowyn nos campos de Pelennor.
"Come not between the Nazgul and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in they turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be lift naked to the Lidless Eye."
Existem dois problemas principais com isso. Em primeiro lugar, é uma ameaça. O Rei Bruxo, em virtude de sua alta posição e por ser um Espectro do Anel, saberia algo da capacidade de Sauron de realizar tal coisa. No entanto, essa citação pode não ser estritamente literal para fins de intimidação. Em segundo lugar, ele pode estar falando sobre transformar Éowyn em um espectro, como foi tentado com Frodo. Ela estaria então sob o domínio direto de Sauron, como Gandalf descreve para Frodo em Rivendell. Nesse caso, a vítima manteria a capacidade universal de fechar a mente para ósanwe, mas parece ser mais vulnerável ao controle direto de Sauron.
No caso de Gollum, temos muito pouca evidência direta. Gandalf sugeriu a Frodo que ele foi torturado fisicamente em algum momento, presumivelmente em Mordor.
"He only wept and called us cruel . . . he whined and cringed, and rubbed his long hands, licking his fingers as if they pained him, as if he remembered some old torture."
Na mesma conversa, Gandalf afirma que "o Poder das Trevas estava dobrando toda a sua vontade" para trazer criaturas malignas para Mordor e que o Anel deixaria Gollum "aberto à convocação" de Sauron. Como Maia e portador do anel, Gandalf deve ser capaz de estimar a condição de Gollum razoavelmente bem. Então, em algum momento, Gollum foi receptivo ao Sauron ósanwe; isso, no entanto, pode mudar a qualquer momento pela recusa de Gollum.
"Ósanwe-kenta" declara:
Their [Incarnates'] bodies being of Eä are subject to force; and their spirits, being united to their bodies in love and solicitude, are subject to fear on their behalf. . . . Upon the body and upon the indweller, therefore, such pressure and such fear may be exerted that the incarnate person may be forced to speak.
Sauron pode ter tentado fazer isso com Gollum através da dor e do medo.
Por fim, embora saibamos que Gollum foi interrogado em Barad-Dur, possivelmente pelo próprio Sauron, os métodos exatos não são claros, exceto pelo fato de serem desagradáveis.
