O Lorde das Trevas não precisava de uma varinha ou corpo humano para viajar. Quando ele é arrancado do corpo, a forma incorpórea do Lorde das Trevas aparece na casa dos Potter, ao lado do berço de Harry, e ele decide que deve se esconder longe da casa. Ele deixou a casa dos Potter com sucesso, apesar de esse ponto, ele era incapaz de segurar uma varinha e não possuía nenhum humano para possuir, para que ele pudesse viajar sem ter nenhum.
