The Princess Diaries é uma série de livros e filmes.

No livro Princess Diaries 6 A princesa Mia (2005) comenta os livros sobre os filmes "O Diário da Princesa 1 (2001) e 2 (2004)":

Although to tell the truth, both of those movies took a lot of liberties with the facts. It was bad enough in the first one that they made my dad dead and Grandmère all nice and everything.

Now, in the latest one, I supposedly broke up with Michael! Like that’s going to happen. That was entirely projection on the part of the movie studio, I guess to make the story more exciting, or something. As if my life isn’t exciting enough without any help from Hollywood.

Existe um termo para esse tipo de referência? O livro faz referência ao filme ou o filme faz referência ao livro?

Esse tipo de referência é intertextualidade. Dependendo do meio acadêmico, seria chamado de "auto-intertextualidade / meta-intertextualidade". O melhor exemplo seria a introdução ao segundo livro de Rambo. No primeiro sangue, Rambo morre. No filme, ele sobrevive. Então eles fizeram o segundo filme. E o escritor de origem foi contratado para escrever um livro sobre isso. Ele abriu com "No meu primeiro livro, John Rambo morre. Mas porque na versão cinematográfica ele não fingiu que também não morreu no livro. Então, aqui estão suas futuras aventuras" (citação muito aproximada).
