Is midsommar inspired by The Wicker Man?
These words were spoken by Ari Aster shortly before the release of his critically acclaimed 2019 horror Midsommar. He was referring, of course, to the influence of Robin Hardy's The Wicker Man (1973), a cult-classic which helped to define the folk horror genre as we know it.

According to Britt Ekland, some animals may have perished inside the burning Wicker Man. However, according to director Robin Hardy, the animals were not inside the Wicker Man when it was set alight (this scene was faked) and great care was taken that they were not in danger of being hurt. Is wicker man based on a true story? It was based on the 1973 cult horror film The Wicker Man, directed by Hardy and written by Shaffer. The novel includes a foreword by Allan Brown. What inspired Ari Aster for Midsommar?
Even the name Hårga has a morbid origin, based on a Swedish folk story about midsummer revelers who dance until they die. Aster also looked at British and German folklore, taking inspiration from literary sources like James George Frazer's The Golden Bough: A Study in Comparative Religion, first published in 1890. Is Midsommar every 90 years? "The last ritual of the film is what happens every 90 years," Aster explained. "The rest is business as usual. Although it is suggested that there are more days of celebration to come. The movie doesn't span 9 days."
Why does Howie scream Daniel?
He screams because perhaps he doesn't actually believe he will be resurrected after all. Howie spends his entire time on Summerisle judging everyone from a place of Christian authority, but when his faith is challenged in the final horrifying moments, it would seem his faith topples a house of cards.
