How do you use divine 5e smite?
You can use a single spell slot per attack that hits to divine smite. Also of note, you can cast one of the bonus action smite spells in advance, then use divine smite on the same attack that triggers the spell. As stated by Lunali you can use one spell slot per attack.
Can you divine smite while raging?
No, raging does not prevent you from using Divine Smite. As you said, it is a special ability that just happens to use a spell slot. If it was intended to be a spell, it would have to call it out as such. As it is, you simply expend one spell slot and some other effect happens. Can you crit with divine smite? So, the weapon attack is the spell effect. The damage of that attack is because of the spell directly and could be re-rolled with empower spell. However, Divine Smite couldn't be.
